Institute to clarify research nurse role

Institute to clarify research nurse role

The Institute of Clinical Research is to assess the training requirements and skill gaps of research nurses.

The Institute say the needs of research nurses have previously been under-supported in recent times.

Caroline Gunnell, chair of the Research Nurse Special Interest Group, said: “It is our mission to become internationally recognised as the coordinating body for research nurses, provide standards, training and professional development and become respected as a key promoter of good clinical research. “

The group will discuss their aims with the UK Chief Nursing Officer to increase awareness of the need for professional development and career structure for research nurses.

Caroline Gunnell added: “One of the main issues we will be tackling is that there is no recognised professional role for clinical research nurses so a coordinated approach to the subject will go a long way to addressing this.”
