Nurse alcohol scheme wins national award

A safe drinking initiative led by community nurses in Preston has won a prestigious national funding award from the Queen's Nursing Institute.

The Ribbleton Alcohol Brief Intervention project aims to show people in the community what constitutes safe drinking and motivate them to change their behaviour accordingly.

District nurses and health visitors will ask new parents to complete a brief alcohol questionnaire to ensure that they understand whether or not their drinking habits are safe.

Parents may be encouraged to reduce the amount of alcohol they drink or to enter treatment. They are then revisited every eight months in order to determine if their drinking habits have changed.

Queen's Nursing Institute Director Rosemary Cook said: "The judging panel as impressed by the dedication of the project leads Natalie and Patsy.

"We are certain that the project will have a real, positive and lasting impact on the lives and the health of people in Ribbleton."

Patsy Myerscough, a nurse from Central Lancashire Primary Care Trust (PCT), said: "We are delighted to have our work officially recognised as best practice by the Queen's Nursing Institute.

"We at Central Lancashire PCT are committed to helping people identify if they are drinking too much so that we can help, and, if necessary, provide the necessary support."

"I work as a Young People's Substance Misuse Nurse and in conjunction with another Young Persons Substance Misuse team from a nearby borough have developed a screening tool for use at paediatric A&E and on the wards to identify alcohol and drug use in young people and give them an oppurtunity to self refer for support at an early oppurtunity. The screening tool has now been further developed and is being used in schools and other children's services to identify vulnerable young people" - Debby Olyott, Young Persons Substance Misuse Nurse, Knowsley PCT, Westvale Clinic, Richard Hesketh Drive, Kirkby L32 0TZ
