Questionnaire diagnoses neuropathic lower back pain

Questionnaire diagnoses neuropathic lower back pain

A simple new screening tool, painDETECT, is now available in the UK to help diagnose the neuropathic element of chronic lower back pain.

It is estimated that half a million people in the UK are believed to suffer from back pain caused by nerve damage.

The painDETECT, tool created by Pfizer, is a simple, self-administered screening questionnaire that can highlight neuropathic pain and facilitate further investigation and diagnosis.

Neuropathic pain is commonly described as "burning" or "stabbing" with "electric shock sensations".

GP Martin Johnson explains: "Neuropathic pain can be difficult to diagnose, due tot the fact that there are no commonly used tests in primary care that prove or disprove that a patient is suffering with pain caused by nerve damage.

"The painDETECT questionnaire is an easy-to-use tool, which gives a clear indication whether or not a patient is likely to have a neuropathic component to their chronic lower back pain, thereby warranting different treatment or potential further investigation."
