Staff 'reluctant' to report poor care

Research carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) shows that one in nine would be reluctant to speak out against poor care. 

Out of 1,005 people surveyed by CQC, 11% said they would be unlikely to raise concern or complain about poor care. 

Reasons listed include not wanting to be thought of as a trouble maker (26%), that complaining would not make a difference (25%) and that members of staff were so stretched that it would not help (15%). 

There was also fear in 11% of respondents that care could get worse if they spoke up. 

Care services do not appear to be responding well to those who speak up. More than half (55%) of those who voiced a concern felt that their feedback wasn’t welcomed, and a similar number felt they had not received a satisfactory response (57%). 

“It is vital that people feel they can speak out when they experience poor care and that they’re listened to properly,” said David Behan, CQC chief executive. 

He added: “In future we’ll be checking whether services are open and encourage people to speak out and respond to what people are telling them.” 

CQC carried out the research to follow up on feedback from patient groups and the public that people were too frightened to voice their concerns about poor care. 

One of the key findings of the Francis report into the failings of care at Mid Staffordshire Hospital was that people were not listened to properly. 

The CQC has been working with voluntary organisations to ensure concerns are passed on quickly, and will continue to encourage people to share their experiences via the CQC website. 


I have been a nurse for 27 years and the quality of care has deteriorated year on year, have I spoken out? yes repeatedly and nothing is done. I've complained to the NMC and what was UKCC, all they did was quote me chapter and verse "my actions and omissions" not really helpful when you work for Trusts that do not wish for poor standards and errors to be revealed. Have I gone to the media? yes. What comes of it all? a storm in a tea cup. The Director of the CQC making comments - that's a bit rich!! For the record I trained at Furness General hospital and have first hand experience of the poor care!!
Nurses should have direct access to the CQC for reporting, this information should taken seriously and given the respect it deserves. Nurses have financial berdens like most, would you risk your job? I think not, this, the lack of transparency, honesty and the culture of "cover up" is the enviroment in which we work!! Support given to people who do speak out is non exsistant - bingo there is your answer.

Speak out about poor care or anything the management don't want to address (knowingly reducing services quality to meet the finance Depts targets and putting patients at risk) they then make your life hell. They tell you either you are with them or your have principles (do what we say or leave). I can't be made redundant as they have said I am too expensive. I am to transfer a high quality, clinically effective, patient focussed, no complaints, significantly below average national averages for complications to implement, is a second rate, fragmented, poor quality, unsafe, pointless service, but hey it saves money so its alright!
