'Nurses miss out on hundreds in tax relief per year'

'Nurses miss out on hundreds in tax relief per year'

Tax relief could give nurses an extra £177 per year

Nurses could get an additional £177 per year by claiming tax relief on fees, uniform laundering and professional body subscription costs.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has reminded nurses that tax relief on the annual registration fee is worth £20 per year.

Nurses are also able to claim for professional subscriptions to the Royal College of Nursing or the Royal College of Midwives, laundering of uniforms, and tights and shoes purchased as part of their uniform.

A recent survey from the NMC found that 70% of nurses are not claiming tax relief.

And 50% were not aware that they could claim tax relief.

Jackie Smith, chief executive and registrar of the NMC said: “It is important that nurses and midwives know that they are eligible to claim tax relief on their annual NMC registration fee as well as other profession related items such as laundering of uniforms and professional subscriptions to their union or professional body."

Tax relief can be claimed for the previous four tax years for those who had not previously claimed.

More information on how to claim is available on the NMC website
