TV star supports better heart health

A campaign has been launched to encourage one million men to check their heart health in a bid to help them avoid the need for surgery.

TV comedian Ricky Tomlinson is backing the drive - and has admitted that he is to undergo a heart operation soon.

The 68-year-old star of The Royle Family revealed that he is set to have an angioplasty to unblock his arteries.

The procedure is due to take place at the specialist cardiothoracic centre at Liverpool's Broadgreen Hospital.

It is the same site where former Liverpool FC manager Gerard Houllier underwent 11 hours of open heart surgery after a match back in 2001.

Ricky said: "Checking your heart health is so vitally important. I know lots of men, me included, aren't keen on getting checked out, but a simple heart check takes a few minutes and really could detect early signs of heart disease.

"I'm keen to get a million men having their hearts checked out, so they shouldn't have to go through what I've got to go through with the surgery."

The bid is part of Lloydspharmacy's promotion offering free checks to men in an attempt to combat the rise in heart disease.
