Updated guidelines for treating STIs

Guidelines for managing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in primary care have been updated.

The booklet Sexually Transmitted Infections in Primary Care provides background information, management options, tests and treatments.

The updated 2013 version, created by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), has been written informally to “be of quick use during a consultation”.

Dr Clare Gerada, RCGP chair, said: “This booklet will be very helpful in managing patients appropriately. It is a readable, comprehensive and very practical “coal-face” guide of what to do in general practice.

"It will also be useful for contraceptive clinics, prisons, HM Forces and A&E teams.”

Dr Janet Wilson, president of BASHH, said: “This booklet provides accurate and relevant information, is easily accessible and definitely useful to all working in general practice and other non-specialist settings.”

Sexually Transmitted Infections in Primary care 2013 is available in PDF format and may be downloaded for free from the RCGP and BASHH websites.
