Major pain event held in GlasgowMonday 18th August 2008 Thousands of healthcare professionals have gathered in Scotland to take part in a major conference on the treatment of pain.Glasgow is hosting the 12th World Congress on Pain which is expected to attract more than 5,000 nurses, scientists, students, psychologists and physical therapists. The event, which is the largest of its kind, will look at different types of pain and techniques for managing it. One of the experts attending the conference is Paulo Quadros, director of Glasgow centre Intlife Pain Management. He commented: "I hope that seeing such an important event take place here means that pain services across the NHS are going to improve for the benefit of people's health." Mr Quadros said that the relief of chronic pain could be one of the most misunderstood concepts in healthcare. "Unfortunately the story of specialist pain services in Scotland is one of chronic failure," he added. "It mirrors all too often the experience of patients being fobbed off with even higher doses of pain killers and the promise of future help which never materialises." The conference is being held at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre until August 22.
