NHS reforms

Nurses are feeling the pressure of frozen vacancies, unfilled posts, downgrading jobs and the increasing use of unqualified workers. The future of the health service remains unclear as the current government continue the debate about how to take the proposed changes forward. However, the reforms may provide an opportunity for nurses to influence and be part of the commissioning of care by GP consortia, and nurse involvement and strong leadership are vital to implement effective change.

Continuing Professional Development

Keeping a professional portfolio is a requirement of post-registration education and practice (PREP), the standards established by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to ensure nurses maintain a high standard of practice and care. Nursing in Practice offers clinical articles that can be used as part of your portfolio. Just answer the questions provided and download your certificate to add to your evidence. With the responsibilities of the primary care nurse increasing and the new requirement for nurses to be educated to degree level, extra support and recognition are vital for all professionals working in this setting. The coalition’s NHS reforms have provided extra challenges and the work of the primary care nurse, in the GP practice or in the community, is a key part of the drive for better public health.
