Julie Mariaki is a BLF Community Respiratory Specialist Nurse for St George's Healthcare NHS Trust (community division).

She has been practicing in the field of respiratory care for eight and a half years.

Julie did her first degree in Athens Greece and came to the UK in 2000 to continue with her studies. After working in the acute sector for two and half years, she decided to undertake the asthma/COPD module in 2002 as she was interested in respiratory nursing.

Since then she has completed various respiratory modules to widen her knowledge in the respiratory field. She is now a nurse prescriber and due to submit her MSc dissertation in Advancing Healthcare Practice.

Her passion for sharing her knowledge with others and has led Julie into teaching as a visiting Lecturer at Kingston University.

The Nursing in Practice Respiratory Care Resource Centre provides you with the latest developments in respiratory care to help you identify, diagnose and treat long-term conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and COPD.

Around 5.4 million people in the UK are currently receiving treatment for asthma, making it a key part of the primary care nurse’s work. The current emphasis on the prevention and treatment of long-term conditions provides nurses with an opportunity to drive forward public health promotion and educate patients about living with respiratory conditions.
