With improved healthcare, lifestyle choices and longer life expectancy, patients are increasingly presented with a number of clinical conditions, making their holistic care more complex. Around 15.4 million people in England have a long term condition: with increasing age patients often have a number of long term conditions which may interact and require specialist support.
Modern nursing skills and healthcare services
Nurses are the lynchpin of healthcare services especially in the community setting. We are held in high regard by the public and other professions – trusted, approachable and knowledgeable.
However, many nurses are becoming increasingly concerned that they do not have updated knowledge on the basic health conditions that their patients are receiving treatment for. Disease diagnosis and management has radically changed over the years and many of us trained as generalists a long time ago. Many nurses have moved into a specialist area and need updates in the basic knowledge they once had. Even specialist nurses identify the importance of having a working background and understanding of the most common medical conditions.
It appears that, unwittingly, nurse and other specialists roles have often eroded the generalist nurses exposure, knowledge and confidence in caring for patients with common conditions.
Accessing appropriate training – when you need it
Nurses frequently report they want more and better training for the roles they undertake. When working in relative isolation in the community, it can be challenging to remain up-to-date with clinical knowledge and skills and this can erode confidence in holistic management and appropriate referral. Nurses returning to practice and those moving to a different speciality area are often unable to access appropriate or timely clinical training, inevitably learning ‘on the job’ and by reading around the conditions they encounter.
To address these frustrations, support safe care and promote best practice, Nursing in Practice (NiP) has developed one day intense training for common clinical areas. A training day provides the latest evidence based clinical knowledge required to manage patients in the community setting. Nurses will be aware that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is implementing a new model of nurse revalidation later this year.
Evidence of continuing professional development, application of learning to practice reflection and peer review are likely to be required. All NiP Training will support these elements and facilitate proof of ‘fitness to practice’.
Aim of the Training Days
The days will provide the underpinning knowledge of a specific condition, giving confidence to practice safely following national guidelines and to refer patients appropriately. The day will provide a lot of information packed into a logical programme with ten learning outcomes that delegates will be able to apply to their practice.
The Back2Basics training days will suit registered nurses who need to expand their clinical knowledge of a key condition succinctly and quickly. The trainers will pace the day and use case studies to reinforce learning.
Update Days are aimed at nurses who are experienced in the management of a clinical area and need to keep abreast of new approaches and evidence. At present only COPD is available but more courses will be made available to suit demand.
All NiP trainers are nurse specialists in their field of expertise; they are approachable, supportive and want you to be competent and confident in your clinical practice.
Developing Competency
Accessing information is only one element of learning. The training day provides the basic underpinning and theoretical knowledge of the clinical area and condition. To develop practical skills and competency in the subject, six activities are provided to consolidate class learning, build on clinical discussion and experience consultations with appropriate patients.
Who should attend?
The training is aimed at those working in the community setting where patients need advice and guidance on a wide range of health conditions. Agency nurses, practice nurses, community nurses, nurses
working in nursing homes, walk-in centre nurses and those new to or returning to nursing, would benefit from attending.

– Basic COPD: covers the clinical knowledge and skills required to manage and support patients with COPD, including diagnosis, medication and monitoring.
– Update COPD: for nurses who are experienced in COPD management covering exacerbations, annual reviews and pulmonary rehabilitation and more.
– Wound Care: covers the basic clinical knowledge and skills required to manage patients with wounds including wound healing, treatments/dressings and effective monitoring.
– Dementia and Mental Health: covers the clinical knowledge and skills required to by the generalist nurse to confidently support patients with dementia and the most common mental disorders seen in everyday practice.
– Leadership for Practice Nurses: designed to give practice nurse team leaders knowledge and confidence by reviewing existing roles and responsibilities and to identify where they could be more effective in their surgery.
