Health professionals called on to help London's smokers quit today on No Smoking Day

London health professionals are being urged to sign up to a new campaign aimed at tackling the one in five deaths caused by smoking in the capital.

The NHS London clinical senate is calling on doctors, nurses, midwives, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals who care for patients in London to know the smoking status of their patients and to help those who smoke quit.

As well as claiming one in five lives, tobacco dependence costs the NHS in London more than £400 million a year. The senate has written to all health trusts and clinical commissioning groups asking them to encourage all NHS staff to help smokers quit.
