RCN responds to government female genital mutilation announcement

The government has announced that frontline professionals will have a mandatory duty to report cases of female genital mutilation (FGM).

The government has tabled amendments to the Serious Crime Bill to ensure the new duty is legislated for ahead of the dissolution of parliament.

Responding to the announcement, Royal College of Nursing (RCN) chief executive and general secretary Dr Peter Carter said: “It's vital that everyone working with girls and young women at risk of FGM knows that it is abuse and are prepared to treat it as such.

“The government's focus on mandatory reporting is an important step towards ensuring that nurses, midwives and other health professionals act as they would with any suspected abuse and report it.”
