Vintage nursing calendar released

Long-forgotten nursing photographs have been made into a calendar by the Queen's Nursing Institute (QNI) for 2015.

The vintage calendar focuses on images showing nurses at work in London and Norfolk which were discovered last year in the home of a former district nurse.

The photographs had not been seen for several decades and sit alongside other historical images including nursing cartoons printed during the first world war, recipes for convalescents and questions from the 1914 Queen's Nurse Exam Papers.

Anne Pearson, the QNI's Director of Programmes, said:  '”The inspiration behind this year's calendar was to show how far community nursing has developed in the past 100 years, to help put today's practice in a broader historic context.

“Nurses working during the First World War and in the early years of the NHS worked in conditions of challenge and austerity, and this is something that many of today's nurses will also identify with.”
