In review: How to spot and deal with substance abuse during Covid-19

We are already seeing increasing mental health problems as a result of the current Covid-19 anxiety and lockdown, likely to increase particularly as some sadly have to deal with bereavement.

It is likely that many will turn to drugs or alcohol as a way of dealing with this but will generally worsen their mental health problems if they do so: indeed, initial reports are of an increase in alcohol sales of around a third.

The social isolation looks to continue for some time, and although many people are using technology to keep in touch, we must remember that not everyone has access to this or the ability to use it. People leading more isolated lives are more likely to turn to drugs or alcohol for comfort, and less likely to have concerns about their use reported by friends or family.

Mental health and dementia lead at Somerset CCG Dr Peter Bagshaw explains how to spot and deal with substance abuse during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This module will update you on:

1. Which groups are most likely at risk of substance abuse during the Covid-19 pandemic

2. Drugs that can become addictive

3. How to spot the signs of alcohol abuse.
