NHS Employers is calling on health professionals to help keep nursing on the shortage occupation list by submitting evidence to the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
On 15 October Theresa May, the home secretary, agreed to the temporary inclusion of nursing on the shortage occupation list. However, this is only an interim measure while the MAC conduct a review to determine if nursing should be permanently included on the list.
NHS Employers today said: “There is a risk that the interim measure to include nursing on the shortage occupation list will be revoked if we cannot robustly demonstrate nursing shortages are on the scale that we know exists.”
The organisation is currently engaging with employers to collate nursing workforce data and “build a robust submission to MAC on behalf of employers in the NHS”.
They are also calling on nurses and employers to submit their own evidence of nursing shortages at a local level by 31 December 2015.
