London nurses offered £250 ‘thank you’ award

Nurses, midwives and healthcare support workers living in London can apply for a £250 award in recognition of their work during the Covid-19 crisis.

A total of £250,000 has been donated to the Royal College of Nursing Foundation by the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation to award healthcare staff who have been adversely affected by coronavirus.

Nurses, midwives and healthcare support workers who live or work in the Greater London area can apply for the ‘Stelios Says Thank You’ award online. Applications will be considered on a first come first served basis.

RCN Foundation director Deepa Korea said nursing and midwifery staff in London have shown ‘unwavering determination’ during the pandemic. As of Monday, the capital had 25,891 cases, the hardest-hit region in the UK in terms of absolute numbers.

Sir Stelios Haji Ioannou, who established the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, added: ‘These awards are a demonstration of our heartfelt appreciation of and gratitude for the work of frontline nursing and midwifery staff in London during this pandemic.’

‘For many it has meant long, stressful hours with little rest or relaxation and lengthy separation from friends, families and loved ones. I trust the money will be put to good use by way of reward when happier times return.’

Actor and RCN ambassador Emilia Clarke has today joined tributes to nurses for International Nurses’ Day in a video published online.

Thousands of former nurses have returned to the NHS to help fight coronavirus, while nearly 19,500 third-year student nurses and midwives have asked to take up paid placements.

RCN chief executive Dame Donna Kinnair yesterday warned that nurses must have adequate personal protective equipment and testing before the lockdown is scaled back any further.
