The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has appointed a director a new role to develop a vision for nursing and midwifery education.
Dr Geraldine Walters will be taking up the new role as director of nursing and midwifery education, standards and policy.
She trained as a cardiac nurse and is currently the director of nursing, midwifery and infection control at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London.
She is also a visiting professor at Buckinghamshire New University and at the Florence Nightingale School at King’s College, London.
NMC chief executive and registrar Jackie Smith said Walters will be leading work with key stakeholders to establish the NMC’s vision for nursing and midwifery education and showing how this supports public protection.
She said: “This is a new role for the NMC, bringing together our education, standards and policy functions into one directorate.
“We know that our education standards need to evolve in the future in order to meet the changing demands that the health and care environment will place on the nurses and midwives of the future.”
Dr Walters has also held executive nurse director posts in acute NHS trusts in London, including St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust.
Additionally, she is the chairwoman on the London Network for Nurses and Midwives.
She said: “I am delighted to have been offered the opportunity to work with the NMC as director of nursing and midwifery education, standards and policy.”
She said she was looking forward to bringing her experience to the new role and working with colleagues and stakeholders “to ensure standards are fit for the future.”
