NMC chair to leave post when successor appointed
The chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has announced he will ‘end his term’ in post, following a turbulent few months for the regulator.

Sir David Warren, who was appointed as chair in 2021, will leave his post after a successor is chosen to replace him.
Commenting on the decision Sir David said it has been a ‘great privilege’ to lead the NMC at a ‘turning point’ for the organisation, but confirmed that the ‘next chair’ will lead the regulator through future ‘transformation’.

His statement added: ‘Until they take up post, I’m looking forward to laying the groundwork for positive change at the NMC following the independent culture review.’
Sir David has faced calls to step down following a damning review into the NMC that was published in July and exposed a ‘toxic culture’ of bullying and harassment at the regulator.

Sir David’s term officially ends in March 2025 but he will step down as soon as a successor takes the post, which is likely to be sooner, Nursing in Practice understands.
