RCN photo competition to find the image that defines 21st century nursing

The public are being encouraged to pick a photo they feel defines nursing in the twenty-first century.

They are being invited to pick their favourite photo from a shortlist of 50 to celebrate the centenary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).

The RCN teamed up with the Royal Photographic Society (163 years old) and NHS Employers (12 years old) to launch its Care on Camera competition.

More than 800 amateur and professional photographers responded.

The judge whittled the entries down to a shortlist of 50.

Voters should visit the RCN to see the shortlist and vote for their favourite by May 31 by clicking on the photos on the site.

The People’s Choice winner will be announced at the RCN Congress in Glasgow on 18 June.

The panel of judges including RCN chef executive Janet Davies, BBC newsreader Huw Edwards, RPS director-general Dr Michael Pritchard, NHS Employers chief executive Danny Mortimer and the RCN members clinical research nurse and freelance wedding photographer Vianne Britten and Jess Moorhouse have also picked gold, silver and bronze winners of the competition as well as a gold winner for entrants 15 and under.

They will also be announced at Congress.

The 50 shortlisted photos will then be toured as part of the RCN’s birthday celebrations.

The exhibition will visit schools, libraries, and health settings throughout the UK.

Davies said:  “I was very impressed by the quality of entries for our Care on Camera competition, each reflecting the complexity and diversity of nursing in 2016. This competition is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the work of UK nursing staff during the RCN’s centenary year – and to recognise the impact nursing staff make every day to their patients, their colleagues and their communities.”

Mortimer said the entries reflected the “positivity that nursing staff feel about their profession and the care they provide to their patients.”
