A nursing team from Sheffield has received the Practice Nursing Award in honours that celebrate excellence in primary care.
The University Health Service Nursing Team in Sheffield won the award against stiff competition in the 12th annual General Practice Awards, run by Nursing in Practice publisher Cogora, to recognise the remarkable work carried out by Britain’s primary care professionals.

Judges said the University Health Service Nursing Team impressed them by being proactive, innovative, open to change and putting the patient in the centre of all that they do.
For example, they created a drop-in sexual health clinic, group asthma sessions that helped students manage their asthma more effectively and provided support for international student new mothers.
A career pathway was also established for nurses who work at the practice, which motivates the nurses to engage, progress and promotes staff resilience and retention.
Events director Rebecca Jolliffe said: ‘After an extraordinary year, the General Practice Awards wanted to recognise those going above and beyond, even before the challenges of 2020.

‘The entries, as ever, were exceptional and we would have loved to acknowledge everyone but are delighted to crown our winners who represent the achievement of primary care.’
The other finalists for the Practice Nursing Award were Karen Walker, Rachel Barnes, Ruth Jacobs and Carley Moore.

Last year, the Darwen Healthcare nursing team from Lancashire received the practice nursing award after developing ways to engage patients to encourage uptake of immunisation and screening programmes, as well as empowering them to take ownership of their health needs.
