HEE opens consultation on nursing workforce strategy

HEE is now consulting on the previously promised national workforce strategy for general practice nursing

Health Education England (HEE) is now consulting on the previously promised national workforce strategy for general practice nursing.

The strategy, due out in the autumn, will tackle issues including training capacity in general practice, increasing the number of pre-registration nurse placements, improving workforce retention and return-to-work schemes.

HEE has said the strategy will bring together work they are doing as well as that of NHS England and other organisations to form a national report.

Having been promised in, the strategy will also take the form of a practical “how-to-guide” for clinical commissioning groups, federations, GPs and practice managers as well as nurses.

The strategy was promised in NHS England’s General Practice Forward View, which also pledged “an extra minimum £15 million national investment” to accompany the strategy.

HEE is now calling on general practice nurses, practice managers, educators and commissioners to submit evidence of best practice that might inform the strategy.

A working group has been formed to consider responses and includes representatives from HEE, NHS England, the Royal College of Nursing, the Queens Nursing Institute and the Royal College of General Practitioners.

The group will also consider evidence obtained through stakeholder engagement events and literature reviews as well as written evidence.

The strategy will build on the District Nursing and General Practice Nursing Service Education and Career Framework launched in October last year.

Draft responses should be submitted by 5 September, with final responses in by 19 September to HEE.GPN-Strategy@nhs.net.
