DietA key requirement of any dietary approach for weight loss is that it enables energy intake to be less than energy expenditure and there is increasing recognition that no single dietary approach suits everyone. Instead, nurses should recommend treatments that best suit personal preference, lifestyle factors and previous weight control experiences. ExerciseApproximately 25% of people would become more active if they were advised to do so by their doctor or nurse. Most patients know that physical activity is good for them, but many don't have the motivation to change their lifestyle, or know where to start. Therefore, primary care nurses are well placed to raise the issue of an active lifestyle with their patients to help in the fight against obesity. The Nursing in Practice Obesity Resource Centre aims to provide you with the latest updates in obesity to assist you with the management of overweight patients and related health concerns, including nutrition, diabetes and heart disease. The 2007 Foresight report, Tackling Obesities: Future Choices, predicted that if no action is taken, 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children will be obese by 2050. Obesity is a priority for the UK government and the white paper, Healthy Lives, Healthy People: Our Strategy for Public Health in England set out plans to improve public health and fight the causes of premature death and illness, including obesity. |
