CPD learning module: Diagnosing patients presenting with suspected asthma or COPD during Covid-19

This CPD module provides practical and pragmatic approaches to diagnostic work up for patients presenting with suspected asthma or COPD during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Learning objectives

What to do:

  • if a patient presents with ongoing respiratory symptoms during the Covid-19 pandemic
  • if a diagnosis of asthma is highly likely
  • for patients for whom a diagnosis of COPD is suspected
  • if the clinical picture is suggestive of a lung cancer component (chest pain, haemoptysis, older age, low body mass index [BMI] and prolonged smoking history).

Carol Stonham, chair of the Primary Care Respiratory Society and senior nurse practitioner (respiratory) at NHS Gloucestershire CCG; Noel Baxter, a GP and executive lead for policy at the Primary Care Respiratory Society
